Months & Dates

Months / Miezi

In Swahili the months in year are named as follows:

Mwezi wa kwanza – Januari
Mwezi wa pili – Februari
Mwezi wa tatu – Machi
Mwezi wa nne – Aprili
Mwezi wa tano – Mei
Mwezi wa sita – Juni
Mwezi wa saba – Julai
Mwezi wa nane – Agosti
Mwezi wa tisa – Septemba
Mwezi wa kumi – Oktoba
Mwezi wa kumi na moja – Novemba
Mwezi wa kumi na mbili – Desemba

Dates / Tarehe

In Swahili language dates are indicated by ordinary numbers whereby one date first, then month and lastly the year. The word ‘tarehe’ comes before the number.

Mfano:

Tarehe saba mwezi wa saba mwaka elfu mbili na kumi na tatu ni 7/7/2013

Terehe moja – the first date of the month
Tarehe mbili – the second date of the month
Tarehe tatu – the third date of the month
Tarehe nne – the fourth date of the month
